Passion Found Through Experience

Mental health is the most crucial thing in a happy and successful life. However, unfortunately, there are millions of people out in the world who suffer from psychological issues such as depression. Interested in human welfare, I sought to try my hand through UNICEF, a globally recognized nonprofit charity. During the experience, I got informed with poor conditions children are going through around the world, and realized that education and mental health among the youth seemed to be among the most pressing matters.

Being unable to physically help those children in Africa since I lived in South Korea, I went to a nearby Jongno Community Mental Health Center to contribute. Until the day before my first volunteer service at Jongno, I was extremely excited about dealing with patients who needed mental counseling. However, it was nothing like what I imagined. All I did was shifting of paperwork, debates, and discussions, without true influence.

UNICEF aids those oceans away while at Jongno, the patients were near but beyond my expertise. Service was not looking far away or into significant situations, but could be resolved through every day experiences: Church Community Helping at a nearby church. There, I learned how to take care and counsel young children with great passion as the children's role model. Rather than looking for virtues externally, I learned to cherish in the sharing of the gifts I already possess.
